Restoring the Balance of Nature & Agriculture

As the Resident Environmentalist at Jetwing Kaduruketha, Ishanda led the ambitious transition of 50 acres of agricultural land from chemical-heavy conventional farming to traditional organic methods. This transformation not only restored soil health but also revived local agricultural heritage.

By abandoning synthetic pesticides in favor of biological pest control—such as using coconut branches to attract predatory birds—the project fostered a thriving habitat supporting 120 bird, 48 butterfly, 20 mammal, and 20+ reptile species. Concurrently, it empowered 31 local farming families through the Farmer Field School, creating a sustainable and replicable agro-tourism model.

Empowering People, Restoring the Land

01

Agricultural Transformation

Converted 50 acres from chemical-heavy farming to 100% traditional organic methods. Eliminated all synthetic pesticides and supported 31 local farming families by reintroducing heritage rice varieties like Kahawanu, Pachchaperumal, and Suwandel.

02

Sustainable Ecosystem

Replaced chemicals with biological solutions to create a thriving wildlife corridor. Used coconut branches and Mee trees to attract predatory birds and insects for natural pest control, completely removing the need for pesticides.

03

Community Education

Established the Farmer Field School to teach sustainable farming techniques and transfer traditional knowledge. Trained young farmers to become agro-entrepreneurs and built sustainable livelihoods for the community.

04

Agro-Tourism Destination

Successfully integrated the active organic farm into a premium eco-tourism experience. Led educational 'Paddy Walks' for hotel guests to showcase traditional agriculture and highlight the importance of biodiversity.
